The Role of Scrubbers in Achieving Green Shipping Goals (EU Fit for 55)
Green shipping is no longer an ambition. It’s a requirement. With new EU rules tightening emissions limits and fuel standards, shipowners face rising pressure to adapt — operationally, technically and strategically.
Scrubbers are best known for sulfur compliance. But their role is growing. When designed for the future, scrubbers support decarbonisation goals while offering cost efficiency and regulatory flexibility.
At ME Production, we build scrubber systems that not only meet today’s requirements, but help future-proof fleets in an evolving regulatory environment.
Fit for 55: What Shipping Must Know
The EU’s Fit for 55 package introduces two major measures for shipping.
The first is the inclusion of maritime transport in the EU Emissions Trading System. Ships over 5,000 gross tonnage must monitor and report their CO₂ emissions, and purchase allowances to cover them. This applies not only to routes within the EU but also to half of the emissions from international journeys that begin or end in an EU port.
The second is the FuelEU Maritime regulation, which introduces a progressive reduction in the greenhouse gas intensity of energy used onboard. This will begin with a two percent cut in 2025 and tighten to six percent by 2030.
Together, these measures mark a shift from voluntary environmental efforts to enforceable obligations. They also create cost structures that reward operational efficiency and penalize emissions. The upcoming Energy Taxation Directive reinforces this by introducing minimum tax rates for marine fuels.
To make sense of the new regulatory landscape, the infographic below outlines the three key climate measures introduced under Fit for 55 that directly impact maritime transport.
How Scrubbers Contribute to Green Shipping
Scrubbers are widely known for removing sulfur oxides from exhaust gases. That function remains essential, especially in Emission Control Areas and busy ports. But the role of scrubbers is expanding in ways that support wider sustainability efforts.
By allowing vessels to continue using high-sulfur fuel oil while remaining compliant with emission limits, scrubbers offer a cost-effective path to cleaner operations. Lower fuel costs can free up capital for further efficiency upgrades or green investments elsewhere in the vessel's energy system, which is where our new Marine Heat pump comes into play for waste heat recovery and reduction in fuel oil consumption.
Scrubber systems developed by ME Production are also prepared for the future. Our designs include integration points for CO₂ capture technology, making it possible to extend emissions control beyond sulfur. This readiness aligns well with upcoming environmental goals in both Europe and global markets.
Another important advantage is compliance monitoring. Scrubbers equipped with real-time sensors and digital logging simplify emissions reporting. This kind of transparency is critical for EU ETS compliance and strengthens trust with both regulators and stakeholders.
As their functionality expands beyond sulfur compliance, scrubbers are becoming a strategic asset in emissions management. The graphic below shows how they support both current regulations and future climate ambitions.
A Balanced Approach to Sustainability
Despite their benefits, scrubbers are sometimes part of a broader discussion around environmental impact. Open loop systems, for example, discharge treated wash water into the sea. While this practice is permitted in many regions, it is increasingly restricted near coastlines and in port areas.
To meet these challenges, ME Production offers closed loop and hybrid systems that retain or treat wash water onboard. These systems support operations in sensitive areas and help owners stay compliant as local regulations evolve.
The practicality of scrubbers also makes them attractive. They can be installed on existing vessels during scheduled drydock or while in service. Our retrofit solutions are designed to integrate smoothly with onboard systems, keeping disruption and downtime to a minimum, but we are also re-designing our scrubbers to be very fit for purpose on New Buildings with significant reductions on CAPAX but remains the same functionionality and quality with low OPEX.
Scrubbers as Part of the Future of Green Shipping
Maritime decarbonisation will require a mix of technologies and continuous adaptation. In this landscape, scrubbers remain a relevant and effective solution — not just for compliance, but as part of a broader emissions strategy.
Their retrofit potential, fuel cost benefits and readiness for future integration make them a stable investment. For shipping companies operating in or with Europe, scrubbers help simplify compliance under Fit for 55 and beyond.
Marine Heat Pumps as new technology to reduce the fuel oil consumption
Part of the equiation is also ME Productions new developed marine heat pump. The heat pump recover waste heat from the on board LT circuit and provide hotwater of up to 90degrees Celcius. The reel purpose of the heat pump is to reduce, or eliminate, the use of oil fired boiler during anchorage or port operations, and this will have a direct impact on the CO2 emissions tipping into the FUEL EU requirements earlier adviced about.
