Northern Denmark gearing up for defence investments

As defence investments increase, Northern Denmark is emerging as a region with strong industrial capabilities to support upcoming projects.

One example is ME Production in Frederikshavn, which is bidding to supply propulsion gear systems for Denmark’s upcoming Arctic patrol vessels.

ME Production is Denmark’s only manufacturer of large-scale reduction gear systems for medium- and high-speed engines and brings more than 50 years of production experience from its base in Frederikshavn.

“We see this as a natural extension of what we already do. We have supplied international navies for decades and have the capabilities required for projects of this scale,”
says Kim Pedersen, CCO at ME Production.

Part of a strong regional industrial base

Over the years, Northern Denmark has developed into a strong hub for maritime, offshore and defence-related industries.

According to ME Production, this creates a unique advantage when it comes to participating in future defence projects.

“It’s not just about one company – there is a strong ecosystem of companies and competencies in Northern Denmark. That means we can contribute as part of a broader industrial base,”
says Kim Pedersen.

Proven experience from larger vessels

ME Production has delivered around 1,500 gear systems globally, many of which remain in operation after more than 30 years.

Its solutions are used on a wide range of larger naval and offshore vessels, including frigates, patrol vessels, rescue vessels and icebreakers. Recent orders within the NATO segment further support its current capacity and activity level.

Local impact – regional strength

A potential contract related to the Arctic patrol vessels could contribute to increased activity and employment in Frederikshavn, while also strengthening Northern Denmark’s position as a supplier to major defence programmes.
