A European operator within the Ro-Ro and car carrier segment has implemented a long-term strategy to balance environmental compliance with operational efficiency. A central element in this strategy has been the installation of scrubber systems from ME Production across its fleet of car carriers.
With a total of twelve scrubbers installed, the company demonstrates how modern exhaust gas cleaning technology can deliver both economic and environmental value in real-world shipping operations.
Choosing the Right Solution in a Developing Market
When the operator began evaluating scrubber solutions, the market was still evolving and characterized by varying levels of technical maturity. A comprehensive assessment of multiple suppliers led to the selection of ME Production.
The decision was driven by a combination of technical and operational advantages. ME Production’s rectangular scrubber design allowed seamless integration into the vessels’ funnels without requiring extensive structural modifications. This significantly reduced both installation time and cost compared to more traditional cylindrical solutions.
At the same time, ME Production’s position as a European manufacturer aligned well with the operator’s operational footprint, ensuring proximity and responsiveness throughout the project lifecycle. The system’s packing bed technology also proved to be a decisive factor, as it uses less water than alternative nozzle-based systems—an important consideration when water must be pumped to elevated funnel positions.
Combined with documented experience in a relatively immature market, this created the confidence needed to move forward.
Fleet Implementation Across Key Trading Areas
The scrubbers have been installed across a fleet of Pure Car & Truck Carriers (PCTC) and Ro-Ro vessels, operating on short-sea routes in the Mediterranean, the Black Sea, and Northern European waters.
Maintenance has been structured around the vessels’ trading patterns, with service intervals typically carried out every six to eight months. This approach ensures that maintenance activities are efficiently integrated into operations, minimizing disruption and downtime.
Delivering Fuel Flexibility and Compliance
From an operational perspective, the results have aligned closely with expectations. The primary objective was to enable continued use of heavy fuel oil, and this has been successfully achieved.
By operating on HFO, the operator benefits from significantly lower fuel costs compared to alternative fuels, while remaining fully compliant with environmental regulations. This is particularly critical in Emission Control Areas, where regulatory requirements are among the strictest globally.
Managing Technical Challenges in Operation
As with most scrubber installations, the project has involved technical challenges that required ongoing attention and adaptation.
The operator has experienced structural cracks in some units, requiring welding to prevent water leakage. According to the company, this is a known industry-wide issue rather than a system-specific flaw. While maintenance costs can be relatively high, they are consistently offset by the fuel savings achieved through continued use of HFO.
Other issues, such as erosion and corrosion in overboard pipes, have been resolved through the application of specialized coatings and rubberization delivered by third-party partners. Early disruptions in emission monitoring systems have also been addressed through upgraded equipment in later installations.
Service and Support as a Key Differentiator
One of the most significant advantages highlighted by the operator is ME Production’s service model. Remote assistance has become a critical part of daily operations, enabling real-time monitoring, rapid fault diagnostics, and direct support to onboard crews.
According to the operator, “Remote assistance is the most important part.”
This capability is complemented by fast service response. With a strong European presence, ME Production can deploy engineers quickly and support maintenance activities even during operation. This minimizes downtime and strengthens operational reliability.
Reflecting on the overall collaboration, the operator describes ME Production as delivering “reliable and good service.” This highlights the importance of consistency and trust in long-term partnerships.
Preparing for the Next Phase: Carbon Capture
The scrubber market continues to evolve, with increasing focus on carbon capture technologies. ME Production is actively preparing for this transition by developing scrubbers that are ready for future carbon capture integration.
This is achieved through partnerships with specialized companies, where ME Production supplies the scrubber system while partners provide the carbon capture functionality. Together, this creates integrated solutions designed to meet upcoming environmental requirements.
A Proven Approach to Sustainable Operations
The collaboration between the operator and ME Production demonstrates how scrubber technology can be successfully implemented at scale.
The case shows that it is possible to achieve fuel cost savings, maintain compliance in strict regulatory environments, and ensure operational reliability—provided the right technology and support setup are in place.
At its core, the success lies in combining practical engineering solutions with responsive service and a forward-looking approach to the future of shipping.
